MELBOURNE, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Scientists in Australia have developed a tailored virus cocktail designed to combat dangerous antibiotic-resistant infections, offering new hope in the global battle against superbugs.

The treatment, named Entelli-02, is a five-phage cocktail designed specifically to target Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC), a group of bacteria responsible for severe, often difficult-to-treat infections, according to a statement released Thursday by Australia's Monash University.

The study represents a new approach for precision medicine in hospitals battling antimicrobial resistance (AMR), it said.

"Entelli-02 is not just a scientific achievement, it's a clinical tool built for frontline use against deadly, drug-resistant, bacterial pathogens," said Professor Jeremy Barr from the Monash University School of Biological Sciences.

"Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest challenges in modern medicine," said Barr, senior author of the study published in Nature Microbiology.

Entelli-02 demonstrates that phage therapy can be a precise, powerful, and clinically ready treatment against multidrug-resistant infections, researchers said.

Entelli-02 is now available for compassionate use and sets the stage for future clinical trials using phage products, according to the study.

"This is a blueprint for how hospitals can respond to AMR outbreaks with precision therapies," Barr said.
